Greenside sale sees top cow sell at 10,000gns

By Jeremy Hunt

A SHOW-WINNING cow, whose heifer daughter was champion at last months Royal Bath and West Show, made 10,000gns when David and Chris Mills dispersed their Greenside Simmental herd.

Established breeders and many newcomers competed for stock from this dispersal. Deep breeding based on some of the most fashionable Simmental sires encouraged confident bidding, clearly enhanced by last weeks export announcement.

"We had over 300 people here and ran out of catalogues," said Mr Mills, Wellington, Somerset. "Last weeks beef export news was a shot in the arm and has given beef breeders a much-needed boost."

There was a sea of new faces around the ring and many secured foundation stock. But it was established supporter Jill Hudson, Barton-in-Fabis, Notts who beat off strong competition with a 10,000gns bid to secure Greenside Discreet Whisper.

This 1993-bred cow is by Sacombe Wishfull Thinking, the bull that "made" the Greenside herd after standing Perth champion in 1990 and was bought by Mr and Mrs Mills for 9000gns. Over 30,000 straws of his semen have been sold.

Discreet Whisper, was offered with a stylish heifer calf by top sire Brinkton Brilliant and was in-calf to him again for December.

Her daughter, the Brinkton Sovereign sired Greenside Gretel Whisper, was this years Royal Bath and West champion. She was served in February to Gretnahouse Supersonic and made 3000gns to M Bears and Sons, Goole, Humberside.

Miss Hudson also paid 4500gns for Greenside Cassandra-Belle, a 1992-bred Wishfull Thinking daughter due in August to Brilliant.

Another of the herds consistently good breeding cows, the 1991-bred Greenside Bella, went to Anthony Lefanu, Beds at 2800gns. She was sold with a bull calf by Wishfull Thinking. The same buyer also paid 2000gns for the Wishfull Thinking maiden heifer, Greenside Holly Maureen.

Young bulls reached 2400gns for a May 1997-bred Bemersyde Eros son taken by A E and C Bishop, Finchampstead.

Averages: 18 cows and heifers £2012, three served cows £2345, six in-calf heifers £1382, five maiden heifers £1186 and five bulls £1774. (United Auctions.)
