Half way through Leicestershire oilseed rape

Ray Coates of Croft Farm, Newton Harcourt, Leics was half way through combining 114ha (285 acres) of oilseed rape today.

Crops that had been sprayed with Roundup (glyphosate) yielded 2.5t/ha (1t/acre), whereas unsprayed crops yielded 3.13 t/ha (25cwt). He said he was not pleased with average rape yields especially as last year’s had come in nearer 4.38 t/ha.

He thought it would be another two weeks before he started cutting his 180ha (450 acres) of well-standing winter wheat, which included Oakley and Labrador.

He also said harvesting of 32ha (80 acres) of winter oats was a fortnight away. Mr Coates was spraying them with Roundup to ripen the straw and they looked very well, he said.

He thought the ground conditions for his heavy land were better than originally expected and he said overall progress was good. ”The sunshine has really made a difference.”
