Half winter barley cut in Dorset/Somerset

HALF of the winter barley area has been cut in Somerset and Dorset, according to Anna Stiles of Wessex Grain.

Pearl and Regina varieties have shown up well. Above average yields between 7-7.9t/ha (2.8-3.2t/acre) and nitrogen averaging 1.7%. “The retention is fabulous, with typically 95% and virtually no screenings.” The specific weight is between 67-68kg/hl.

The winter oilseed rape harvest is roughly 25-30% completed, and some farmers have just started wheat.
