Hand-rogue weed beet – BBRO
By FWi Staff
SUGAR BEET growers who have not yet removed weed beet have been advised to do so by the British Beet Research Organisation.
“The longer the weed beet grow, the more viable seeds they set,” warned Mike May in an advisory bulletin from the BBRO research station at Brooms Barn.
Controlling weed beet using glyphosate so close to harvest would cause rotten roots, contaminating the sample and inducing further rots in the clamp.
Flowering stalks should be cut by hand or machine and removed or left to dry on the crop canopy, advises Mr May.
