Happy bands canal walk

Happy bands canal walk

WHAT a happy band of Berkshire members met at Kintbury Station to walk along the Kennet and Avon canal towpath to Hungerford.

It was a perfect summers afternoon for the expedition organised by contact leader Hilda Gore. The narrowboats chugged by one side of us and the Great Western trains hurtled by the other side but none of the travellers could have imagined the variety of subjects being discussed.

We talked about Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, a sponsored walk that Barbara Tickner had completed in aid of the Womens Nationwide Cancer Control Campaign and then moved on to favourite recipes.

While we took a rest beside a lock, Margaret Insley talked of old-fashioned toys made from hazel sticks, which included whistles and potato guns.

We had a short hill to climb from the canals edge to Pat and Derek Smalleys beautiful garden for a traditional FWC contribution tea. It was good to see old friends as well as some new members there.

Enjoying a break are (L to R) Ann Sellars, Barbara Tickner, Margaret Insley and Sheila Ederson. The towpath trail led to a contribution tea.
