Heat builds for cookery return

THE DAIRY Council has called for cookery to be put back on the national curriculum, just days after Prince Charles made the same plea.

Dairy Council chief executive, Jill Eisberg, said it was important that pupils were taught how to be creative with food and how to make informed choices about what they eat.

“We wholeheartedly support the reintroduction of cookery into the national curriculum,”she said.

Ms Eisberg was commenting after announcing the winners of the Dairy Council‘s sponsored cooking award as part of design and technology week‘s food challenge.

The event was co-ordinated by the British Nutrition Foundation, Sainsbury‘s, the Design and Technology Association, and the Department for Education and Skills.
 
Pupils from schools in Gloucester and Southampton took first prizes in the competition.

The judges said Years 1 & 2 at Kempsford Church of England Primary School in Gloucester responded imaginatively to the brief of designing a frozen yogurt dessert.

Secondary school pupils from Bookfield School in Southampton won with their recipe for a low-fat dairy-based pasta sauce.
