Holstein takes Cow of Century title

A TRIP from Derbyshire to last weeks DairyScot event at Ingliston, Edinburgh, proved to be lucrative for Elizabeth Wolfenden.

Her four-year-old Canadian-bred Holstein cow, Excaliber Saucy Skychief, beat 14 others to take the title of Cow of the Century.

Mrs Wolfenden, who runs a 250-cow dairy unit at Longford, Derby, picked up a cheque for £5000 after the four judges agreed that the cow, sired by Donnandale Skychief, was the best on show.

Runner up, and collecting £400, was Gavin Lawrie and sons Ayrshire cow, Bankend Wren.

The 15 animals forward for the Cow of the Century competition were the 10 champions and reserves from classes at DairyScot, supreme champions from the Royal Highland Show and the Royal Welsh Show and a nomination from each of the British Friesian Breeders Club, the Dairy Shorthorn Cattle Society and the Guernsey Cattle Society.

DairyScots four judges this year were all women: Barbara Lee and Alta-Mae Core from the USA, Lisa Window from Hunninton, West Midlands, and Lena Lewis from Taunton, Somerset. All commented on the outstanding quality of the cattle presented at the show.
