‘Horrifying’ violence against meat inspectors
By FWi staff
GOVERNMENT meat inspectors are being subjected to horrifying levels of violence and intimidation, a new survey has claimed.
The survey, conducted for the trade union UNISON, found that more than 50% of Meat Hygiene Service inspectors had been attacked or verbally abused by abattoir workers.
The survey revealed that 8% of meat inspectors who returned questionnaires had property damaged and 10% had been threatened with a weapon.
UNISON wants tough new measures to combat the problem and has called for urgent action from the Government.
The survey also revealed that 1% of meat inspectors had required medical assistance after assault.
