Illegal to feed swine pigmeat

FEEDING swill containing pigmeat back to swine is to be banned, MAFF has announced.

But the NFU said the amounts fed in Britain were insignificant, so the industry would not face disruption.

Farm minister, Jack Cunnin-gham, said he would issue proposed legislation for consultation in the New Year. The ban was recommended by SEAC, the governments BSE advisory committee, as a way to remove any risk of a transmissible spongiform enceph-alopathy spreading through the pig population.

The use of poultry and feather meal in poultry diets will also be banned.
