IN BRIEF

&#8226 CHANNEL Island milk production costs vary by up to 8p/litre and most producers have scope for considerable savings, according to a Kingshay Farming Trust report.

In an average 90-cow herd, labour is the largest expense at 7.5p/litre, followed by purchased feed, says Kingshays Richard Simpson.

He cites a difference of 5p/litre in purchased feed costs within herds averaging 4500 litres. He suggests producers keen to cut costs should target milk from forage and concentrate use.
