&#8226 BRIAN Peacock has been appointed by farm ministers as the new chairman of the Milk Development Council. He succeeds John Moffitt, who chaired the organisation since its inception in 1995.

Mr Peacock, who started his three-year term this week, also chairs the Leatherhead Food Research Association and the Milk Quality Forum. He is currently the vice-chairman of the UK Dairy Association, and was previously technical director at Northern Foods.

Other new members appointed to the MDC to represent producers include David Hall, chief executive of The Milk Group, Devon dairy farmer Richard Holland, and Haydn Jones, who farms in Carmarthenshire and is also a member of the Residuary Milk Marketing Board.

David Stark, regional industrial organiser with the Transport and General Workers Union, will also join the MDC board to represent the interests of industry employees. Mr Stark is a member of the Scottish Agricultural Wages Board and of the Rural Forum for Scotland.
