IN BRIEF

&#8226 AGRICULTURAL genetics giant Monsanto is to buy DeKalb Genetics and Delta & Pine in two deals worth about $4bn in total.

The company already holds a 45% stake in DeKalb, the second largest supplier of hybrid seed corn in the USA, and 4.7% of Delta & Pine, the countrys leading cotton seed producer.

The purchases will boost the availability of insect resistance traits, says Monsanto, and provide access to second wave genetically engineered improvements like yield and nutritional content.
