• THE Meat and Livestock Commission has launched a £1.5m campaign to boost beef sales. Co-funded by the EU, the promotion will centre on the television commercial featuring the elderly couple enjoying steak on their wedding anniversary. Additional promotional activity will involve supermarkets, independent butchers and the consumer press.
• SINCE the beginning of 1998, MAFF ministers have received 1100 letters from MPs about biotechnology and genetically modified foods and about 5500 letters from members of the public and others, junior farm minister Jeff Rooker said in a parliamentary written answer.
• APPLICATIONS for Tir Gofal, the new Welsh agri-environment scheme, must be submitted by May 7. The government has anticipated about 600 agreements with farmers will be made under the scheme in its first year.
• COLIN Maclean has retired as director general of the Meat and Livestock Commission after 11 years with the organisation. Gwyn Howells, formerly the MLC marketing director, succeeds Mr Maclean in the top job.
