IN BRIEF
IN BRIEF
• DAIRY producers and their vets can now treat milking cows against bovine respiratory disease, bacterial pneumonia and foul-in-the-foot with a broad spectrum antibiotic which has no requirement to discard milk. Excenel RTU, from Pharmacia and Upjohn is the most widely used dairy antibiotic in North America, says the company.
• A FREE guide, Managing Your Pregnant Ewes is now available from Intervet. Covering the crucial stages of pregnancy and their management, it also includes simple checklists on key topics, and aims to help minimise risk factors which are reducing lambing performance (0800-1695351).
• Coliovac, the Intervet vaccine which helps protect young lambs against E coli is now fully available after two years of reduced supplies. The vaccine confers protection via the ewes milk and is given in two doses four to six weeks apart, with an annual booster given four weeks before lambing. The company is offering a second dose free special offer until the end of February.
• THE Wiltshire Horn Sheep Societys flock book will now only accept scrapie genotyped rams which fall within MAFF guidelines for scrapie resistance. The society acknowledges the move will mean additional work for breeders, but says it will provide a long-term benefit for the breed. *
