IN BRIEF

uQUALITY Meat Scotland announced this week that Scottish pigmeat will join beef and lamb in being promoted under the "Specially Selected Scotch" label. The decision to focus on the brand name follows extensive market research where consumers, particularly in south-east England, said the name gave them confidence in the product. They also indicated that they were prepared to pay more for Specially Selected Scotch meat. Another task facing QMS, says technical director, Alastair Donaldson, is to link all elements of the production chain to present a product that is assured from gate to plate.

uA SURPRISINGLY high number of dairy farmers are inadvertently paying several thousand £s in tax, says Mike Butler of accountant and business adviser Tenon Rural Services. "We have come across examples of where the payment sent to former members of Milk Marque last autumn has been included as taxable income. In fact as a partial repayment of their investment it is exempt and should be excluded from the income tax bill." In some cases the payment was several thousand £s, so the tax figure in question can be up to £2000, says Mr Butler. &#42
