Irish safety record takes a large dip

IRISH farmers are being urged to "think safety" following a sharp escalation in the number of accidents and fatalities.

"Last year, over 3600 accidents were recorded on Irish farms, almost double the figure in 1996," said Teagasc safety officer, John McNamara, ahead of next weeks Farm Safety Action Week. The number of fatalities came to 24, of which 14 involved tractors and machinery.

Mr McNamara urged every farm family to familiarise itself with the Teagasc code of practice preventing accidents to children, and for every tractor in the country to be fitted with a safety cover on the powershaft. &#42
