Irish see rams top 8200gns
SUFFOLK rams squeezed cash from breeders on both sides of the Irish border with an 8203gns top price recorded at the Eire sale in Co Kildare and 4600gns at Balmoral in Ulster.
Crosemanor breeding from Robyn and Stan Hulmes Shropshire flock was responsible for the 8203gns sale topper for Herbert Stanley of Co Laois. The lamb, which is by Crosemanor Ard Ri and stood champion, is out of a ewe by Crosemanor Noble and from the same family which produced Mr Stanleys £6300 top price last year.
Two of the breeds big names shared the highest investment – Tom Bailey, of the Glenho flock in Co Meath, and Aberdeenshires Barclay Mair from Muiresk.
Second top price at the Eire sale was 4733gns paid by Mark McMennamin, Co Donegal, for a ram lamb by Glenho Romulus from Philip Lynch, Co Louth.
Mainland bidder Richard Bulmer from Malton, North Yorks, gave 4417gns for a ram lamb from Co Meath-based breeder Jeff Baileys consignment while another from the same pen realised 4102gns to John Hanley, Co Tipperary.
The reserve champion, a Fordafourie Lucky Strike son from Susan OKeefes flock in Co Cork, went to Myfya Evans in Denbighshire for 2776gns. The 145 rams sold at the Co Kildare fixture averaged £1053, up £215.
The Balmoral sale saw the average price up by £60 on the year to level at £517. Top call of 4600gns came for a ram lamb from Harry Stewarts Castlewellan flock at Downpatrick. The lamb, by Muiresk Rainbow Quest, stood supreme and was bought by Alfred Robinson, Downpatrick. *
