Italy hankers for Scots beef

A MAJOR exhibition of Scottish beef will be held in Milan as soon as the BSE export ban is lifted.

It will be organised by leading Italian meat trader Filippo Accomazzi who, last Saturday, promised to do all he could to restore Scottish beef to Italian consumers.

He was speaking after judging the heifer classes at the Scottish Premier Meat Exhibition at Bridge of Allan, the final stage of the Scottish Winter Fair.

"Our people want your beef," he said. "They have been starved of quality meat and I promise to do everything in my power to give you back that trade as soon as possible."

The championship at the event, meanwhile, went to Castlemilk Farms, Lockerbie with a Limousin-Angus cross steer.

At the Winter Fair at Perth, prices topped at £3100, paid for the cattle champion, a 500kg Limousin cross steer from Caithness crofter Graham Henderson. It went to meat traders Matheson Jess, Dundee and Paisley.

Reserve was another Limousin, this time from Allan McGregor, Perthshire.

The sheep championship went to a pair of Suffolk crosses from the Campbell family at Alnwick. They were bought for £700 apiece by Fife butcher J Penman who also paid a record £500 each for the champion pair of pigs, Pietrain crosses from David Robertson, Crail, Fife.

Reserve in the sheep lines were pure Blackfaces shown by Hugh Hamilton, Dumfriesshire, which sold for £160 each.

More than 10,000 people attended the Winter Fair.n
