Jailbird pigs command top prices
SIR DAVID Ramsbotham, chief inspector of Prisons, praised a farm at North Sea
Camp Prison. More than 1,000 pigs are kept at the open prison near Boston,
Lincolnshire.
The farm provides employment for low-risk inmates. Some 58 prisoners work on
the 404.7ha (1,000 acre) farm. Most of the land is used for crops, but there are
also 900 bacon pigs, 100 breeding sows and 900 sheep. Some rare breeds are kept
there.
The bacon is said to be of such high quality that it is now sold on the open
market for top prices.
