IMPROVEMENTS in weather forecasting technology could bring big benefits for British food industries, according to a new report.

The report outlines work assessing the potential of seasonal weather forecasts up to six months in advance.

These could be used for everyday decision-making in every area of the food chain, from crop scheduling to product marketing.

The report, Seasonal Weather Forecasting for Agriculture, was launched by MAFF scientist Dr John Sherlock who chaired the group.

“There is no doubt in my mind of the potential benefits of seasonal weather forecasting for food chain businesses,” he said.

“Now is the time for industry and forecasters to work in partnership to ensure these potential benefits are realised by UK food chain businesses.”

Better mathematical models, increasing computer power, and better understanding of climate variations have improved forecasting, said Dr Sherlock.

Speakers at the MAFF-sponsored conference stressed that further collaborative work was needed to develop the forecasts and their uses.

The seasonal weather forecasting report was produced by a steering group of the Foresight Food Chain & Crops for Industry Panel.

It is the culmination of more than three years work, involving forecasters, retailers, agronomists, mathematicians, modellers, farmers and processors.
