Keep break crops, urges Dalgety
ARABLE farmers have been urged to buck the downward trend and reconsider cutting back on spring break crops.
Julie Goult, oilseed and pulse-seed manager at Dalgety Arable, said break crops not only provide a yield boost but could also help to reduce fixed costs.
She said their importance should be recognised if farmers do not want to risk falling cereal yields by moving into the third wheats with increased pressure from cereal diseases and grass weeds.
Ms Goult is predicting a drop this year in spring linseed area because of reductions in area payments.
But she said it still enjoyed the highest support level per hectare of all arable-aided crops.
