Kent wins plaudits from RABI

KENT has scooped three of the four awards presented by the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) for helping those in need in farming last year.
The RABI Cup for 2000 went to David Kemp, who was praised by judges for being the driving force behind the Quex 2000 fundraising event in Kent.
Kent RABI committee secured the Sam Taylor Cup for its work in Quex 2000, and the Dennis Brown Shield for raising the highest county total of 52,000.
Herefordshire prevented Kent from making a clean sweep of the awards by winning the Beaufort Shield for the greatest improvement in fund-raising.
During 2000 the county increased its fund-raising by more than 800%, contributing more than 28,000 to RABI funds.
RABI chairman John Wallis said: “These awards acknowledge the valuable work carried out by hundreds of volunteers throughout the country.”
The awards were due to be announced at the RABI annual general meeting in June, but were brought forward when this was postponed due to the foot-and-mouth outbreak.
RABI, which was founded in 1860, helped a record number of 1647 families last year, with the number of new retired or disabled beneficiaries taken on rising by 37%.
A total of 2.4 million was spent helping those in need in 2000. And nearly 196,000 was paid out to families as a result of calls received on the emergency helpline.
But despite receiving record donations of over 642,000 in the last two years, RABI recorded a deficit — its third in as many years — of 102,000.
