KEY INFO ON GRANTS AND PLANNING
RURAL planning used not to be something at the forefront of most farmers minds. But with so many people looking to diversify, knowing how to deal with planners is now an essential skill.
Getting a grant, too, has always been a mystifying process that leaves many farmers feeling distinctly bewildered. The grant system now seems more complex than ever, so a working knowledge of the system is very helpful. And getting an agricultural tie removed from a farm cottage can be a nightmare, unless you know where to go and what expert help to seek.
As if that werent enough, the whole way in which planning rules are put into practice is being changed. Local authority planning departments, many of whom are struggling to fill vacancies for planning officers, are now asking for more information at the time of the initial application.
And the governments green paper, due later this month, is expected to announce a revamp not just of the planning process, but of permitted development rights, the traditional planning soft-touch applied to new farm buildings.
These are just some of the many contentious areas that will be covered in this years seminar organised by the Rural Planning Division of the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants. Called Planning and Funding Rural Recovery – policy into action, the conference costs £40 and takes place at the Barclays Pavilion at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh.
