Labelling fails to identify GM foods

THREE-quarters of common foodstuffs sampled in supermarkets could contain ingredients made from genetically-modified (GM) soya or maize, but do not say so on their labels.

The findings, from research carried out by the Consumers Association, has led the organisation to urge the government to make clear its policy on GM foods.

European Union law means GM foods should be clearly labelled.

But that is not possible where GM crops are harvested in the US and mixed with non-GM varieties before shipping.

The government is set to announce legislation this month which will fine food manufacturers and retailers up to £5000 if they break rules on listing GM ingredients.
