Lapwing numbers drop
NUMBERS of breeding lapwings in England and Wales have dropped by almost half in the past 11 years, with changes in agriculture blamed as the main cause.
A report by the British Trust for Ornithology and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds showed that the position was worst in Wales where about three-quarters of the lapwing population had been lost.
The report says the decline is related to the intensification of arable and grassland farming. *
