Late start for Carlisle B&Ws
Late start for Carlisle B&Ws
FOUR months later than usual, the rescheduled Borderway Black-and-White sale at Carlisle went ahead last week and attracted a top price of 9500gns, with 91 head levelling at £2300.
Edward Brown, who heads up the dairy department at auctioneer Harrison & Hetherington, conceived the sale 15 years ago and for this one he had lined up a consignment of heifers from the North American Indianhead herd that was being looked after by the Logan family from Stirling.
And it was stock from across the Atlantic that took the richest pickings with the August 2000-bred heifer Indianhead Durham Roxan walking away with the top price of 9500gns.
Bred out of Sellcrest No Rachel Red, one of the most famous red-and-white cows in the world, and by Elton Durham, this maiden heifer is from six generations of cows classified Excellent.
Her dam peaked at 17,270kg and has a fistful of top show titles won in illustrious company. Buyer was John Jordan, Broadheath, Worcs.
And it was another from the Indianhead consignment that squeezed 6100gns from the crowd. The 14-month-old Indianhead Win Rhapsody from the famous Blackrose family travels to Bideford, Devon to join the Grigg familys herd.
Rhapsody is by Ladys-Manor Winchester and out of the 12,300kg Indianhead Lindy Rapture.
Holstein photographer Jane Steel saw her Lomond Encore Tara change hands for 5500gns. By Marcrest Encore this Jan 2001 bred heifer is from four successive generations of dams classified Excellent, with an average 93.5 points. Buyer was Keith Jamieson, Annan.
There was no getting away from the appeal of the Indianhead heifers and particularly when Indianhead Romancer combined two of the worlds greatest cows, Blackrose and Star Lily. Bred out of Crestomere Milan Luci she goes to Messrs Coombes, Ringwood, Hants, at 4700gns.
Indianhead Leduc Royal, a maiden heifer out of the 12,700kg plus Ernest-Anthony HR Rozine, made 4500gns to Kevin Leach, Garstang, Lancs while Indianhead Storm Dancer, inseminated to Manta in March sold at 4200gns to the same herd (Harrison & Hetherington). *
