Late start on wheat

WHEAT harvest was started two days ago on Ian Jackson’s farm at Bowsden, five miles from the Scottish border. Rain has since stopped any more progress.

He has combined 30ha (75 acres) of Claire and Consort. First wheat Consort yielded 10t/ha (4t/acre), which was almost up to average for the farm. Second wheat Claire has yielded 7.2t/ha (2.9t/acre). "We usually hope for 3.5t/acre (8.6t/ha) on second wheat, but I think there are better crops to come."

"I normally expect to finish one third of the 200ha (500 acre) wheat crop by the end of August, and the forecast is shocking for the end of the weekend. I’m considering hiring another combine."
