Later arable aid sowing date for UK farmers

By FWi staff

THE European Commission has agreed to delay the arable area payment cut off date by two weeks to allow UK farmers to sow their crops.

UK farmers will now have until May 31 to sow crops on which they intend to make a claim for arable area payments.

Welcoming the ECs decision, junior farm minister Lord Donoughue said: “I am extremely glad that the Commission have agreed to our request to defer by two weeks the latest sowing date for crops on which farmers will be making claims under the arable area payments scheme.

“The heavy flooding experienced over Easter severely disrupted the cultivation operations of many farmers and led to the loss of crops. The delayed sowing date will allow farmers to complete their sowing and, where necessary, re-sowing operations,” he added.
