Lebanon halts German herd
A CONSIGNMENT of 34 German cattle has been stuck off the coast of Lebanon for three weeks refused access due to the countrys tight BSE laws, according to Brussels-based Eurogroup for Animal Welfare.
"So far, four animals have died of heat exhaustion, while another six have given birth." said spokeswoman, Veronika Haunold.
The problem has arisen because Lebanon refuses to accept EU animals over 24-months old. *
due to the perceived BSE risk. But, to return them to the EU is not an option, because of foot-and-mouth concerns.
"The kindest thing to do would be to have them put down, but the shipper does not want that as he would not then be paid," claimed Ms Haunold.
