Ledgend bull makes 5000gns at Charolais societys show

A ONE-OFF service by a neighbours bull brought success for two Cumbrian breeders at last weeks spring show and sale of the British Charolais Cattle Society.

Stephen and Dorothy Peile achieved the top price of 5000gns at Carlisle. Their Nov 1995-bred Parkgate Ledgend was one of the last calves produced by Reddings Ivanhoe, a son of Kersknowe Fortune, owned by a neighbouring farmer that cost just 1700gns.

But Ledgends dam, the Fort Tarzan sired Parkgate Cham-pagne, is one of the best cows in the Peile familys small herd of12 pedigree Charolais cattlerun alongside the farmsmain dairy herd at Waverton, Wigton, Cumbria. She hasalready produced a 5000gnsbull and another at 3800gns.

"Ivanhoe is a bull that has bred well and fortunately we decided to use him for the one service just in time," said Mr Peile.

Ledgend, who stood second in his class to the eventual champion, was one of the highest weight gains bulls on parade at 1.57kg a day. He had a Beef Value of 20 and a 400-day weight of 721kg.

He was bought by father-and-son team Robert and John Barker, Barnard Castle, Co Durham, who will use him in their herd of around 90 spring-calving sucklers.

"We have one pedigree Charolais cow and we might buy another but he will be used primarily for crossing," said John Barker, who arrived just as the bull was going into the show ring.

Judge Tom Arnott, Kelso, found his champion in Mortimers Latin, by the Cockerington Baron son Mortimers Festival and out of a Tattenhall Impeccable cow. Consigned by Mortimers Farm Ltd, Eastleigh, Hants, he was secured at 3500gns by MacGregor Farms, Lockerbie.

Second highest price was Chipping Norton, Oxon, breeders D Lovat and Sons Shotley Leander. This son of Maerdy Victorious is out of a cow by Yellowhill Adventure and had a Beef Value of 27. Buyer was M P Ashton, Cefn Coch, Welshpool.

A 4700gns call from R &#42 Thompson and Sons, Bishop Auckland, secured them Mossermains Landmark from the Clarke familys herd at Cockermouth. This son of Chartley Frisk headed his class.
