WITH only 70% of the UK sugar beet crop processed and 15% still in the ground, British Sugar urges growers to liaise with area managers to ensure roots reach factories in best possible condition.

Despite tight supplies no factories stopped working over the holiday, reports BS operations manager Robin Limb. However, hard frosts down to -14C in the West Midlands are a fresh concern.

Former FW barometer grower Andrew Symonds lifted 600t from frosted land in Worcs for immediate processing at Kidderminster between Christmas and the New Year.

But care is vital, only a very small amount of frost-damaged roots being needed to bring a factory to a halt, warns Mr Limb.
