LIMOUSIN breeders enjoyed a better year than before, with more sales and a slightly higher average.
In total, 113 head, 10 bulls more than the year before, levelled at £2763, £26 up.
There was a 75% clearance rate of 150 sires forward with the top call coming, yet again, for a son of Broadmeadows Cannon. Woodhouse Prince had all the Cannon qualities of width and stretch, but also impressed with his scale.
He was bred by Geoff Blood of Stoke-on-Trent but was offered at Perth by Keith Redpath, Chirnside, Berwickshire, who bought him at the breeds autumn sale at Carlisle last year.
Prince was fashionably bred out of a Talent dam and took the senior championship under judge John Fieldson, Gainsborough, Lincs. He has a beef value of 21 and was bought at 7800gns by York-based Millington Grange Estate.
High performance figures added value to sale prices, with 52 having beef values of 18 and over, which puts them in the top 25% of the breed on performance. They averaged £3019.
Jim Goldie, Dumfries, delivered the goods in style with five bulls selling at 3000gns including the second highest price of 6500gns for Goldies Pepperpot. This son of Lascard is out of an Epatant dam and is a three-quarter brother to the past Perth junior champion Goldies Onyx that made 15,000gns.
The old adage a good bull can never be the wrong colour was upheld when the black-coated Westhall Black Politic from Alan Fotheringham, Forgandenny, Perth, realised 6000gns. This polled son of Hewsons Black Golddust is graded 96% pure. Buyer was Ribigill Estate, Lairg.
The supreme championship was won by Archie MacGregors Allanfauld Prototype, a Bailea Mayall son with a beef value of 21. Buyer was A Yool, Croy, at 5500gns.
There were three bulls at 5000gns. Chapelpark Pingu from J and M Pirie, Inverness, was sold to work in James Dargie and Sons suckler herd at Dundee while Doug Edgar of Penrith sold Shire Pitman to * Hutchinson, Bishop Auckland.
Loaded with 15 bulls bound for north Scotland was the Crofters Commission wagon. This bulk purchase will provide sires to hire out to crofters (United Auctions). *
