Limousin sales double delight
LIMOUSIN breeders cashed in on the market for pedigree calves when a seven-month-old bull from the Sarkley herd of Glyn and Chris Pennie drew a top price of 4800gns at Borderway Mart last weekend.
Staging their fifth sale of youngstock at Carlisle, the Pennies shared the day with a consignment from the Glenrock herd of Stephen and Helen Illingworth, Lockerbie.
The combined buying power of two herds proved unbeatable when Sarkley Pepsi came under the hammer. By Heros, he is from the Pennies herd of just 10 cows which produced the 9000gns top price at the recent Red Ladies sale.
Pepsi impressed on conformation and BLUP performance figures including a Beef Value +31. Joint buyers were Gordon and Dougie Cruickshank who run the Balnacraig herd in Aberdeenshire and breed society chairman John Logan of the Homebyres herd at Kelso.
Lively bidding took the eight-month-old Sarkley Pluto, a Genus Heron son, to 3600gns. Plutos new owners, L Forster and Son, Hexham, also gave 2400gns for a spring-born Sarkley heifer by Greensons Gigolo.
The Heros influence continued. He was responsible for the highest priced Sarkley female with a daughter bred out of a Strathallan Diplomat cow selling at 3000gns to JWH Neale of Launceston.
The outstanding muscling of the 11-month-old Glenrock Onslow produced enthusiastic bidding for this Daim son. He topped the Illingworths consignment at 2400gns and joins the pedigree herd of ET White and Son, Brewood, Staffs.
An autumn 1998-bred bull by the Illingworths French import Marquis sold for 2000gns to C Phillips, Taunton while an equal bid led the herds heifer trade with a Marquis daughter taken by IG Thomas for his herd at Carmarthen.
Averages: Sarkley – 22 bull calves £1488 and 12 heifers £1098. Glenrock – 17 bull calves £1035 and 16 heifers £821. (Harrison and Hetherington) *
