Lincoln Red soc goes for young blood
Lincoln Red soc goes for young blood
IN a bid to encourage "young blood" into Lincoln Red cattle, the breed society has introduced a heifer rearing and selling competition.
The fifth auction of these cattle was held at the Lincolnshire Show where two entries realised £500 each.
The competition – which requires YFC members to select and rear a heifer and then to sell it at auction as a yearling – drew nine entries this year.
All were bought by new breeders. First at £500 was Brandon Bella bred by R and Burtt and exhibited by Ed Bourne followed by an equal bid for Limestone Mary from the Limestone Farming Company and exhibited by Gary Willoughby.
Buyers were C Chappell, North Kelsey, Lincs, and M and R Bettinson, Whaplode Fen, Lincs, respectively.
The breeder retains 65% of the sale price and the exhibitor takes the remainder to cover expenses.
Steven Massarella, whose family are well known in the world of showjumping, bought five heifers to start a new herd at Thurcroft Hall, Sheffield. *
