MAFF sets new compensation rates

THE revised compensation rates for the BSE and offspring cull compensation schemes has been announced by MAFF, taking effect on 1 April.

The new rates will be payable for an animal slaughtered because it is suspected of being affected by BSE.

The sum paid will be an amount equal to the lower of either the market value of the animal or the indicative market price (IMP).

This will be a maximum of:

  • £503 if BSE is confirmed by post-mortem

  • £628.75 if BSE is not confirmed

    Scrapie compensation has also been set for sheep or goats slaughtered as a suspected animal in the month of April 1999 will be:

  • £19.15 if scrapie is confirmed by post-mortem, and for cases subsequently confirmed as unaffected whatever is the greater of-

  • The amount payable for a confirmed case and;

  • Such sum as appears to be, having regard to any evidence provided by the owner of the animal slaughtered, to reflect the market value of the animal, subject to a maximum sum of £400 for each animal.

    The compensation rate was calculated by using the average cull ewe market price and the number of animals sold in Great Britain in February this year, as published by the Meat and Livestock Commission weekly UK market survey.
