Malton confirms plans to expand processing site
MALTON Bacon Factory, the UKs leading pigmeat processor with annual sales of £600m, confirmed this week it has submitted detailed plans for a £20m expansion which could create another 60 jobs at its headquarters in Norton, North Yorks.
The company, which employs 2500 staff in Norton, has applied to Ryedale District Council to build a 4000sq m extension to cook and process pork, bacon and ham.
Max Hilliard, Malton Foods managing director, said: "The application is a first step in considering and evaluating an investment programme of about £20m to modernise the companys cooked meat processing facilities.
"This investment would demonstrate our commitment to our suppliers, the workforce and the local economy."
Trevor Hayes, Maltons public relations manager, added that he hoped the expansion would help UK pig farmers. "Although we are still in difficult times we are committed to maintaining a viable business – and that will obviously have a positive effect on other parts of the sector." *
