Managed retreat study
COASTAL land in southern Eng-land, considered suitable for "managed retreat", is likely to be identified as the result of a £1.5m study.
The three-year study will be conducted by the Environment Agency and the governments conservation adviser English Nature with the help of a 50% grant from the EU Commission.
It aims to discover whether it is practical to protect prime wildlife habitat as part of local flood defence strategies over the next 50 years.
Focusing on six "eroding" areas in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Hants, the study will also consider where managed retreat should be considered and, if habitat is to be lost, where replacement habitat can be created. *
