McCain pays more for spuds

POTATO processor McCain has released its new price contracts for the 2002/03 season.

Key varieties, including Pentland Dell, Shepody and Russet Burbank will be worth 8-12% more per tonne, depending on delivery period and bonuses.

Values for general types, like Piper, will increase by about 5%, says managing director Nick Vermont.

“We recognise that all our business partners need to make a margin, and that includes farmers,” he said.

“We wont have an industry if we dont have a viable supply chain.”

The move reverses last years cuts, typically 3-5% on contract varieties, which angered some growers.

“They came at an unfortunate time,” admitted Mr Vermont.

“There were a lot of potatoes in the ground when we announced our prices, and no-one could have known that many would still be there in April.”
