Meat inspectors to get Government protection

By FWi staff

MEAT inspectors are to get Government protection from bullying and assault by slaughterhouse managers and their staff.

The Government agreed to the new measures after a survey released over the weekend showed many inspectors were subjected to horrifying levels of violence and intimidation.

The survey, conducted for the trade union UNISON, found that more than 50% of Meat Hygiene Service inspectors had been attacked or verbally abused by abattoir workers.

The survey revealed that 8% of meat inspectors who returned questionnaires had property damaged and 10% had been threatened with a weapon.

It also found that 1% of meat inspectors had needed medical help after assaults.
