Mechanical sheepdog trials within weeks

BRITISH scientists announced trials of the first mechanical sheepdog are expected within weeks.

It would have artificial intelligence designed to reduce stress to farm animals during herding.

The mechanical dog is the result of three years research. Ducks will be chosen for herding in the trials, which will take place indoors. The robot is not robust enough to work outdoors yet.

The robot will eventually be able to see animals, work out where they are moving and encourage them to move to specified positions.
