MEPs warming to vaccination policy

SERIOUS consideration must be given to a European-wide policy on vaccination to control a future outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, says a group of MEPs visiting farms and rural businesses in Britain.

The delegation from the European Temporary Foot-and-Mouth Committee, which visited Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Scotland last week, is due to visit Devon today (Fri, Apr 26). German MEP Wolfgang Kreissl-Dîrfler, has the job of drawing up the committees recommendations, said his report will examine vaccination.

It will also examine the related issue of export rules and call for an international strategy on combating foot-and-mouth disease. The MEPs also heard heartfelt pleas for much tougher border controls to prevent contaminated products from entering the EU and bringing in infection.
