Military seeks help from farmers

By FWi staff

MINISTRY of Defence chiefs are looking for farmers to help escort livestock under the foot-and-mouth welfare disposal scheme.

The MoD has asked the National Farmers Union to help find up to 300 volunteers to accompany animals as they are moved from abattoirs to landfill sites.

About 200 people are needed across Cumbria and Devon and another 100 people for elsewhere – essentially in clean areas.

Ideal candidates are farmers, farm workers or agricultural students. They must be “clean” of the disease and able to work long hours, possibly away from home.

Terms are 50 per day, plus expenses. Vehicles will be supplied and basic training provided.

Tom Hind, NFU meat hygiene advisor, said he understood the military were looking for people who could dedicate some time to the job.

He said he had already been inundated with offers of help but more would be welcome.

Potential volunteers can e-mail him at thomas.hind@NFU.org.uk

Messages should include name, address, contact number and a brief description of any special qualifications such as slaughter licence or ability to travel.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux has launched an emergency freephone number for people needing financial advice.

Money and debt advice is available to farmers and other rural businesses as well as farm workers and other employees.

CAB advisors can help prioritise debts, negotiate realistic repayment terms with creditors and even represent clients in court if necessary.

The number is 0800 138 1647 (13.00 to 20.00 hrs, Monday to Friday). There is an e-mail service at ruralemergencycab@nacab.org.uk
