Milk race revival a big opportunity
Devon farmer Allin Bewes (right) is canvassing support for the idea of re-running The Milk Race, the 10-day round-Britain cycle race last held in 1993.
"We want to promote milk, improve the image of farmers and farming and bring an exciting feel-good factor back into the countryside that everyone – young and old – can relate to," says Mr Bewes.
"We think a major international cycle event that travels across Britain, which is exiting and free to watch and which will act as a showcase event for farming and the countryside could be one way to do it."
Initial estimates suggest a budget of between £1m and £1.5m would be needed but Mr Bewes says many groups and companies are backing the idea. And he now wants farmers to show their support for it.
"If dairy farmers want the idea progressed, then progressed it will be. If they arent bothered about it, then we may as well pack up."
