Montbeliarde fans aplenty

MONTBELIARDE cattle attract a staunch band of supporters among milk producers preferring a less extreme type of dairy cow and they turned out in big numbers when the Chater herd was dispersed for C G Walker at Oakham, Leics.

The sale, which also included the owners British Friesian herd, saw bidding peak at £750 for the Montbeliarde third calver Chater Isobare Fee. By Isobare and sold freshly calved, she was bought by Mr Porter of Leicester.

There were three bids of £730. A Montbeliarde heifer by Sauve was offered dry after a heifer lactation of 6355kg at 4.66% fat and 3.66% protein. She was springing to the bull Faraday and bought by Mr Leeson, Lichfield, Staffs.

A newly calved Montbeliarde cow by Isobare giving 31kg was bought by Mr Hollingsworth from Sheffield and a freshly calved heifer by Brando – whose dam had given over 10,100kg – was putting 30kg into the tank and was claimed by Mr Porter.

Montbeliarde youngstock sold well with heifer calves to £200 and bulling heifers to £395. Major youngstock buyer – as well as claiming several cows – was Mr Nicholson, who travelled to the sale from Glasgow.

Best for the British Friesians was £600 paid for a fifth calver.
