More dairy character in new generation BH cows

By Jessica Buss

NEW generation British Holstein cows showed more dairy character than the older generation animals seen at the British Holstein Societys National Holstein show.

Italian Judge, Guiseppe Quaini, said he now saw two types in the showring, compared with just the older type of cow seen at the BHS autumn show he judged in 1994.

Older cows shown had frame and functional ability. But younger cows displayed breed improvement, still having frame but with more dairy character, he said.

He placed G F A Williams Glenridge Raider Cinema as the Supreme Champion, adding this to her Supreme Champion title from last years European Dairy Farming Event.

"She is a complete cow that everyone would want, with a combination of power and a balance of all traits. She is deep in the chest with great capacity – a milking machine," said Mr Quaini.

Smiddlehill Jed Erle, reserve cow owned by the Field of Dreams Syndicate of Ian Montgomery, John Gough and Mike Halliwell, had good show appeal and a good udder, he added.
