By FWi staff
VETERINARY surgeon Judy MacArthur Clark is to head the Farm Animal Welfare Council following the departure of Colin Spedding, who stepped down last month.
Mrs MacArthur Clark has been a member of FAWC since 1994 and has chaired the Councils working groups on research and development and cloning.
She is a past-President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and will remain an elected member of the Colleges Council.
Mrs MacArthur Clark is also a member of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Home Office Animal Procedures Committee.
She is an advisor on biomedical science and ethics and sits on the Governing Board of the Silsoe Research Institute.
In announcing the appointment yesterday (Thursday), junior farm minister Elliot Morley said described Mrs MacArthur Clark as a “most effective member of FAWC”.
“I am delighted that she has accepted our invitation to serve in the Chair,” he said.
Mr Morley paid tribute to Sir Colin, whose tenure ended on 31 December, saying he had done much to make FAWC the leading voice on farm animal welfare.
