University YFCs could keep students in the

SETTING up Young Farmers Clubs in universities is one of Nicola Daviess ideas for boosting YFC membership. This would encourage members going up to university to stick with the movement, she says, and bring it to the attention of young people who would not otherwise know about it.

Nicola (24) has got a lot out of her YFC membership and put a lot back too. So much so that she won the NFYFC Member of the Year title at this months Royal Show.

A member of Felin-fach YFC, Ceredigion, for the past 10 years Nicola is currently club chairman, chairman of the county executive and a member of the National 2010 Committee. Her proudest YFC moment was, she said, being chosen to represent Wales YFC at a seminar in Hungary early this year which was held in conjunction with the Council of Europe. Here she discovered that youth organisations across Europe are all facing the same kind of problems.

A former holder of the Miss Royal Welsh title, Nicola has just completed a year as Royal Welsh Lady Ambassador. She is a farmers daughter who shares her familys enthusiasm for breeding and riding Welsh cobs, and works as a translator. She is employed by the local authority to translate documents from Welsh to English or from English to Welsh.

There were 10 regional finalists in the Member of the Year competition and Emma Gregory from Derbyshire was runner up with Isobel Wootton from Bedfordshire third.

Other Royal Show competition results:
