National grain test scheme talks start
TALKS are under way to try to secure government funds to launch a national grain testing scheme that would be acceptable to growers and the grain trade alike.
The aim is to introduce an independent service for two reasons, said Alastair Dickie, director of market information with the Home Grown Cereals Authority.
He told farmers at an HGCA malting barley seminar in Inverness that an independent testing scheme would counter growers complaints at harvest time about crop rejections. It would also address trade resentment that it was having to provide free testing for farmers.
"All I can say at the moment is that I am acting as a facilitator in talks between the farming union leaders and the trade representatives.
"We need to put an end to the current multi-testing and find something that is acceptable to everyone," he said.
But government support for the initiative would be vital. Farmers could not be expected to fund the establishment of a national testing service, Mr Dickie said. *
