National Trust quandary over deer

THE National Trust is under pressure to lift its ban on deer hunting following the publication of figures which show wild red deer numbers have declined by more than a third on Trust land.

Fears have been raised that the Trusts shooting policies are scaring the deer from the estate and that poaching may have increased.

Hunts claimed that the herds will die out if hunting stopped, as farmers would kill the deer in an uncontrolled manner.
