National Trust upholds deer hunting ban

THE National Trust upheld its decision to ban deer hunting with hounds on its land. It said that all scientists who have tested hunted deer agreed that they did suffer.

A unanimous decision was taken after a presentation by Dr Roger Harris, of the Royal Veterinary College, who led the latest study into hunted deer.

The study, funded by the Countryside Alliance, criticised evidence previously presented by Patrick Bateson, professor of animal behaviour at Cambridge University. His report led the Trust to ban deer hunting on its land in April last year.
